Using Images in Craigslist Posts: Conversion Software and Hosting

Craigslist Car Images

A picture is worth 1000 words. For car dealers that want to post on Craigslist this is very true. Everybody wants as many pictures as possible. The more pictures you have (and higher quality) the better chances you have of buyers calling you.

What is image hosting? Simply put, every file on the internet has a host. A host is a machine where the image (or any file) is located. Every image you see on the internet has to have a host. That includes the pictures of your vehicle that you want to post. When you are placing your ad, you have two options: you can host images on Craigslist or you can use a different host.

When you host images with Craigslist the chances of getting ghosted is less. This is because ghosting filters are trying to eliminate repetitive posts that are done mostly with an auto poster. These programs usually do not upload images and therefore the chances of getting ghosted decreases when you upload images to Craigslist. The downside is that the quality is usually very poor. You cannot upload more than 4 pictures. And the size cannot exceed a certain limit (about 300 pixels).

Where else can you host your images? There are a lot of alternatives. If you have a website, you can serve images from there. The problem is that Craigslist checks the domain and IP addresses of image hosts among all posts. If a particular image domain and IP is being used a lot, that increases the chances of getting ghosted. That is why nearly nobody serves images from their website directly. If you do that, you can probably post 1-2 vehicles per week at most. So, what else can you do? You can serve your images from free image hosts like photobucket, flicker or imageshack. There are quite a few of them. It requires more work to upload your images and setup your templates accordingly, though. Because these image hosts actually have a server farm for hosting images, their IP addresses change continuously (even though the domain stays the same). That is why it does not cause any increase in ghosting score. Amazon S3 is a similar service that you can purchase and pay very little for hosting your images. Their IP changes all the time like other image hosts. Carsinia automatically converts your images and uploads them to Amazon and serves them from there when creating your posts.

Why would you want to convert parts of the post to images? Read the page about Craigslist templates. You want to keep your posting text short. This minimizes risk of getting ghosted. The more you say, the higher probability of using some word that might trigger ghosting. Similarly, you may want to limit the number of images and jam them into one image. Carsinia does that automatically for you.

How do you convert a post to image? You can do a screen capture and paste it to Microsoft Paint or Photoshop and save it as an image. Or you can use our DMS to automatically convert parts of your post to images. Another factor that you may wonder is "Does the image size matter?": Yes. You probably want to vary your image sizes. Since Carsinia converts the images based on the current vehicles text, the sizes are almost always slightly different. Contact us for more info and demonstration.
